Alleged Wrong-Way Driver Kills 1 In Head-On Crash

A man allegedly driving the wrong way on a Southern California freeway has been taken into custody following an accident, which took the life of a teenage man. According to official reports, the accident took place on Aug. 9 at 3:30 a.m.

A Honda was apparently traveling eastbound on the westbound lanes of Freeway 210 near Vernon Avenue in the town of Azusa when it ran head-on into a Nissan that was going in the proper direction. The police believe that the driver of the Honda and his passenger fled the scene of the car crash on foot. A 24-year-old man was taken into custody approximately two hours later on suspicion of involvement in the accident and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The accident proved fatal to the 19-year-old El Monte man who was driving the Nissan, and a 16-year-old female passenger in the car had to be taken to County-USC Medical Center for treatment of moderate injuries. The westbound lanes of the freeway had to be closed until 7:40 a.m. as the police completed their investigation.

The family of any person who is killed in an automobile accident in California has the option of filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the people responsible for the crash. An attorney may be able to guide that family to an advantageous settlement by helping to assemble and present relevant evidence that demonstrates the liability of the other party. In cases that involve criminal charges, evidence entered into the public record during a criminal trial may be germane to the civil suit and might be used to bolster a plaintiff's case.
