The day after Christmas, a big rig crash on a California expressway left several people with serious injuries. The truck accident occurred when a semi-truck crossed the center line of a busy highway. It hit at least four vehicles and jackknifed across the roadway. At least five people were injured, and three of the victims suffered serious injures.
Three people were trapped in their cars in the multi-vehicle accident. According to firefighters, Medevac helicopters landed on the expressway and took several victims to local hospitals. Ambulances drove the other injured victims to area hospitals for treatment. An update on the victims' conditions is not currently known.
Unfortunately, accidents involving semi trucks occur on a regular basis on California roadways. Because of the weight and size of commercial trucks, traffic accidents involving big rigs are generally more serious than other accidents. Numerous fatalities and injuries are reported every year as a result of these accidents.
The inherent danger posed by semi truck accidents can be made worse depending on the type of freight being carried. Hazardous or flammable materials can cause secondary injuries in addition to injuries sustained in a collision.
Truck drivers owe a duty of reasonable care to avoid injury to other motorists. A failure to exercise reasonable care, resulting in injury, may give rise to a civil claim for relief. Those that have been involved in an accident with a commercial truck may want to speak to an experienced San Francisco attorney. This will help to ensure their claim is properly assessed and that their legal rights are protected.
