Casper, Meadows, Schwartz & Cook is pleased to announce our sponsorship of the Fourteenth Annual Moot Court Competition to be held at the Contra Costa County Courthouse in Martinez, CA on October 20, 2018. Our firm’s Managing Partner Nick Casper will also serve as one of the volunteer judges at the competition.
The Moot Court competition draws teams of two to five students from local area high schools who compete in mock trials of actual, landmark cases from the U.S. Supreme Court. The materials involved in these cases are designed to challenge students on their abilities to present arguments supporting their stance, as well as foundational skills outlined in the Common Core (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
October’s competition will require student teams to present oral arguments before a three-judge panel, on which Attorney Nick Casper is volunteering to serve, comprised of actual attorneys and judges. This year’s case will be Citizens United v. FEC (federal Election Commission), a 2010 landmark Supreme Court case concerning the regulation of political campaign financing. In addition to teaching students invaluable skills through a unique hands-on approach, the competition will also allow them to engage with concepts that have become so very prominent in our nation’s current political and legal climate.
