The Earl Warren American Inn of Court’s JOKER: mens rea received national recognition during the American Inns of Court’s Inns of Distinction Gala.

After being named one of the nationwide finalists earlier this year out of 325 programs, the Earl Warren American Inn of Court’s JOKER: mens rea, a legal education program created by attorney Adam Carlson, won first place. Carlson, of Casper, Meadows, Schwartz & Cook, accepted the award during the organization’s Inns of Distinction Gala at the United States Supreme Court.

As part of the awards presentation, attendees viewed excerpts from an interview with Carlson discussing the inspiration behind the program, why it was created, and its contribution to the legal profession, along with clips of the program itself. Carlson was then invited to the stage to receive the award from the President of the American Inns of Court and the Chair of the Program Awards Committee.

“Receiving this award is incredibly meaningful because it reflects the impact the program has had on the legal community,” Carlson said. “We created JOKER: mens rea to encourage thoughtful discussion around difficult legal issues through a different lens, and it’s an honor to see that work recognized by the American Inns of Court. I’m grateful to everyone who helped make the program possible.”

Using the firm Joker as the foundation for legal discussion, JOKER: mens rea examines issues surrounding criminal responsibility, competency, and the treatment of mentally ill defendants while encouraging conversations among judges, attorneys, and other legal professionals.

“One of the most rewarding parts of this experience has been seeing how the program has resonated with members of the legal profession,” Carslon said. “I hope it continues to encourage conversations about professionalism, ethics, and some of the complex issues lawyers and judges encounter throughout their careers.”
