KEEPING SAFE

Ridesharing has become increasingly popular as a convenient and cost-effective way to get from place to place. But with more people using rideshare services, the question of safety arises – how often do ridesharing accidents happen? Continue reading to learn more.

STATISTICS SURROUNDING RIDESHARING ACCIDENTS

While one should not get into an Uber or Lyft and expect to get into an accident, the reality is that these accidents do occur. According to Lyft’s own research detailing vehicle and driver safety statistics, approximately 99% of ridesharing trips occur without incident. While Lyft only shares data about fatal traffic collisions, accidents have increased from 22 incidents in 2017 to 49 in 2019. Presumably, there has been a similar steep increase in traffic collisions involving injuries on rideshare trips.

According to the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago, ridesharing-related accident fatalities have steadily increased. The school’s research concluded that ridesharing accidents have contributed to a 3% increase in overall vehicle-related accident fatalities. It is thus reasonable to conclude that the increase in traffic due to Uber and Lyft’s services has directly contributed to an increase in overall fatal vehicle accidents.

It’s also important to note that these statistics only capture fatal accidents and don’t reflect the number of accidents involving injuries only, not death, or that occur but go unreported.

COMMON CAUSES OF RIDESHARING ACCIDENTS

While many factors can contribute to a ridesharing accident, some of the most common causes include the following:

  • Driver negligence or distraction: Many drivers use their phones while driving, leading to various risky behaviors such as speeding, tailgating, or running red lights.
  • Poor roadway conditions: Potholes and other road hazards can create hazardous driving conditions that make it difficult for rideshare drivers to navigate safely.
  • Weather conditions: Inclement weather can reduce visibility and increase the risk of an accident.
  • Passenger distraction: Passengers can be a significant source of distraction, especially if they are talking to the driver or using their phone while in the car.
